Threading the Sky

This artwork transforms a functional passageway into an immersive experience for the museum visitor. White-paper sculptures on one side and black-paper sculptures on the other, tighten an already narrow hall. Edges of the cut paper might brush against the viewer’s shoulder, only allowing a single person to walk through at a time. 

 

Foliage-shaped cut-paper turn and twist upwards towards the skylight ceiling, as if reaching for the sun. At the top of the underpass, the two sides seem to grasp for each other, yet remain out of reach. Their near-miss or near-connection creates a thin line of void at the top of the tunnel, where a band of sunlight cascades down. 

 

The installation depicts the moment immediately prior to the black and white reach each other - before the yin and the yang are engaged and activated - the thin thread of empty and open space between them holds infinite possibilities for creativity, life and growth.
