animation projected on smoke

Beauty of Distance: Songs of Survival In A Precarious Age--17th Biennale of Sydney
Sydney Opera House
May 14, 2010

During the opening week of the Biennale of Sydney, a spectacular smoke projection beamed an animated image of the Monkey King Sun Wukong, a popular and irreverent figure in Chinese mythology, onto a cloud of smoke in the sky. The movement of the smoke was choreographed by the graceful movements of a trained martial artist. Constantly coalescing and dissolving in form, the Monkey King revealed himself over the audience in a poetic and playful fusion of tradition and technology.
